Top 5 Morning Rituals

Do your mornings ever just feel a little out of control? The alarm goes off, you press snooze 4 or 5 times, then when you finally manage to open those tired eyes you check every social media account you have (plus the Daily Mail Online for important ‘news’ updates) until you finally realise you have precisely 13 mins and 30 secs to get ready for work AND eat breakfast. You sprint out of the door, toast in hand, make up in bag and hope to God there’s a seat on the bus so that you can make yourself look and feel human…ring any bells?!

This used to be my crazy series of morning habits errrry day and, unsurprisngly, I was always stressed and in a bad mood by the time I arrived at the office. Naat a good start to the day!

Being someone who’s a little obsessed with making every day as amazing as possible, I started researching how top entrepreneurs, world leaders and my favourite yogis start their day. And the answer really is simple - formulate a morning routine! By making the most of your precious time in the mornings studies consistently show that you will be more productive, less stressed, inclined to eat more healthily and generally a whole lot happier. 

MY FAVOURITE MORNING RITUALS

Since creating my morning routine, I have so much more energy, a positive mindset and I actually get excited about talking to people when I get to work without even a sniff of coffee (cray cray, i know). To help you on your way to a more awesome day, here’s my top 5 morning rituals:

Join the 5am Club (and no snoozing!)

This one may sound a little crazy but hear me out! It’s very hard to do good if you’re not feeling good and waking up at 5am (or at least an hour earlier than normal) gives you the opportunity to start the day in the best way possible. You’ll have more time to exercise, plan for the day, eat well and fit in as many positives morning rituals as possible. Plus studies show that early risers tend to be generally more optimistic…and, who doesn’t want to be

optimistic! 

Something I’ve always struggled with is the strong temptation to press the snooze button as soon as my alarm goes off, because sometimes (everyday), my eyes just don’t want to open yet. BUT my favourite days are always the ones where I jump out of bed straight away and get started with the day. Plus, by snoozing you are confusing your poor body as you’re tricking it into thinking that the sleeping pattern is starting again, making waking up harder and harder each time you press that magical button.

Drink warm lemon water

Drinking lemon water is one of the best ways to start your day as it not only rehydrates your body after a night’s sleep, it also flushes out the toxins in your body. Lemon is full of anti-oxidants and the nutrients you need to help kick start your metabolism in the best possible way. 

Meditate

I’m a BIG fan of meditation and a total convert. A regular meditation practice has impacted my life in the most profound way and I strongly encourage you to give it a try! There are so many benefits for your body and mind including combatting stress, increasing productivity and improving your overall wellbeing.

Yoga/Exercise

Moving your body in the morning not only helps you to keep fit and healthy, but the movement also pumps endorphins around your body which is proven to make you feel happier and more focused.

Everyone is motivated by different forms of exercise so choose something that works for you and it will make it much easier to get out of bed! I’m completely in LOVE with yoga and for me it’s the best possible way to start the day. The benefits go far beyond improving your flexibility, it’s a total mind-body workout that tones, strengthens and has the power to completely change my mindset. 

Journal/Gratitude Diary

Focusing on the positive things in your life is one of the most important things you can do every day. No matter how big or small, there’s no better feeling then realising how wonderful your life is and how much love and support you have around you. So try it for yourself and you’ll soon see how a gratitude diary/list can bring happiness and fulfilment to your life, even before you have stepped out of the front door!

Take a piece of paper or notebook and write down 3 or more things that you’re grateful for. Think about your health, your family and friends, the security and safety of your house - the list really is endless!

I hope this helps you on your way to creating a positive routine in the morning! Remember that you don’t need to try them all…just pick a few of your favourites and work on making those a habit, then you can gradually add more in if you have time. Most importantly, make sure you’re making time for you every single day.
