Skin Series: ageing is a fact of life, looking your age is totally up to you!
You want to know the secret to looking JLo level good in your 50’s? Taking care of your skin in your 20’s. We hate to break it to you, but the ageing process kicks off in your early 20’s thanks to our production of collagen and elastin slowing down. Collagen and elastin are the magic behind our skin looking fresh and taut so naturally, when they start to produce less and less, our skin responds by fine lines and wrinkles setting up camp on our face. Ugrh.
Whilst ageing is a fact of life, looking your age is totally up to you and that begins with the healthy skin habits you practice. In this month’s Skin Series, we’re diving deep into managing the signs of ageing both in and out of your skincare cupboard.
So, you’re telling me I can be speeding up the ageing process?
Unfortunately, yes. Whilst you’re not going to age quicker, your skin can look a lot older than you actually are if you’re not taking care of it. The biggest accelerator for ageing skin is sun damage.
Your biggest insurance policy against premature ageing is always going to be sun protection. Sun damage comprises of two forms of UV damage, UVA and UVB and boy do they pack a punch.
Here’s our trick to knowing the damage both forms can cause. Imagine the A in UVA stands for ageing and the B in UVB stands for burning.
UVA damage works its way down to the dermal layer of your skin where our skin cells function as their peak. Whilst you might not see the impact immediately, this UV damage is where you’ll discover unwanted pigmentation, sunspots and fine lines and wrinkles pop up unannounced.
UVB on the other hand is where your sunburn happens. The most obvious and immediate response to UV damage, UVB rays impact the epidermal layer, aka the surface of your skin, and contribute to skin burning and skin cancer. Don’t think that you’re safe from the damage of UV rays if it’s cloudy outside or if you’re hanging out in the office all day. The temperature doesn’t determine the power of UV rays and yep, it can also make its way through windows.
Fortunately, taking control against UVA and UVB damage couldn’t be easier! Make SPF your final step in your morning skincare routine and reapply throughout your day. Looking for a SPF product that is broad spectrum will support you against both UVA and UVB rays. Remember, the SPF that may feature in your BB cream is not enough to protect your skin against the sun. You need to invest in a dedicated SPF product that works with the other products in your kit.
Ready to fall in love with antioxidants?
Another unwanted guest that contributes to the signs of ageing is free radical damage. Free radicals are nasty little unstable atoms that impact the function of our skin cells. They show up through sun exposure, pollution and other environmental factors and contribute to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles and deplete our overall skin immunity.
Antioxidants are the ultimate skincare superhero as they work to not only fight off free radicals, but they also support the repair of existing skin damage. How? Well, for starters they literally decompose the free radicals to prevent them from getting into our skin and messing up all your hard work.
Depending on the antioxidants you’re working with (we prefer ours in a serum or face oil), they’ll also get to work at correcting skin concerns and existing damage. For example, our Turn Back Time Face Tonic heroes Carrot Seed Oil which is loaded with skin-regenerating antioxidants. Not only is it incredibly detoxifying and invigorating but will also work hard to boost cell regeneration and growth. Louder for the people in the back, it will help prevent wrinkles.
Another antioxidant that shines in our daily tonic is Prickly Pear. Loaded with Vitamin E, this antioxidant will help lock in your skin’s moisture whilst working to brighten your complexion. Addressing unwanted pigmentation on the skin, Prickly Pear works to strengthen your skin whilst it fights off the nasties trying to bring it down.
Your morning coffee hit reimagined
For many, the biggest concern when it comes to the signs of ageing is bags under our eyes and crow’s feet. If this sounds like you, we’re adding some extra oomph to your morning coffee thanks to our Peeper Perfector Coffee under eye oil.
Just like our morning brew gives us a pep in our step, caffeine works the same for our skin. Using coffee arabica bean extract, this morning under eye oil is going to target puffiness and dark circles from the get-go. Invigorating and plumping, we pair caffeine with the Vitamin-C loaded Kakadu Plum and Rosehip to significantly brighten and rejuvenate this area of concern.
The perfect addition to your daily anti-ageing skin ritual and the ultimate skin pick-me-up when you need it most, we think it’s about time you get rolling.
